LG Apex! Can't Remove Battery!?

I have the LG Apex from US Cellular. I love the phone, but it has a spot for 3 little lights that are supposed to flash when I get a message, missed call, voice mail, or facebook update. But since I got it I have not seen the light(s) flash even once. No matter how long I wait it will not flash. Is the light spot just there to be there or is it supposed to light up??? I tried to remove the battery but i cant figure out how the 'flip' to do that either! Please help (with both questions) I am getting really frustrated.
