My apartment has free cable, I use HD-TVs, can I buy my own HD converter box and run the free cable through it?

? I am trying not to have to rent cable boxes with all those fees from the cable companies. Is this possible, I seen some at Bestbuy by Apex. I have HDMI cables. Thanks
