How to design your own shirt?

I just want to buy a tank top or T shirt from any place and write my own phrase on it... so I was think a stencil and spray paint... will that work? If not, any suggestions on how I could do that so the words don't wash off or bleed when i wash it or anything? I don't have / can't afford like the print making equipment that I used in graphics class in high school lol
