How do i connect an AT&T cable box to my apex 40' HDTV?

This happened with my other HDTV also, I plug in the cable box to the tv via RF cable and the tv wont automatically pick up the signal. I will follow the tv's auto channel scan crap and I still get nothing. Any ideas?
